Classroom Management in Preschool
What are some helpful ways to ensure a positive classroom environment, along with classroom management for preschoolers?
Angie, I think it will be important to establish the class rules and expectations the first week of school. By making the guidelines clear and repeated often, the students will have a better understanding of what is expected of them. The more they practice, the less room for confusion.
This is so true! That was one of the first things that I did with my students. I must say that I am very, very impressed with them. They even repeat the rules back to me! :)
Angie, Classroom rules and expectations is a big part of classroom management in preschool. At this age, you have to model the behavior you want your students to achieve. As you are a preschool teacher, you understand that you have to continue to practice and model behaviors for your students for a while before they completely get it. Sometimes, it takes some students the whole year to understand and grasp the concept. You have to be patient, understanding, and compassionate.
Exactly! Just as I commented to Shannon, they have really impressed me with how well they have comprehended the rules. I am always showing them respect and I use manners while talking to them. Due to me always demonstrating this to them, they show it back to me and to their peers. I must admit, it was a little rough at the very beginning of the year, but I used a lot of strategies from last year along with some new. Everything is coming together very nicely.
I think it is important to model, model, model for preschoolers. Telling the right way to do something just isn't enough. They have to see it acted out in front of them. Positive classroom management comes from a praise system. Even when I have students that are not doing the right thing, I praise those that are and it makes the other students think about their actions. I'm not a preschool teacher, but I think this method could be applied to preschool age children.
I believe that avoiding negative reinforcement (sitting out of playground time because of behavior in the classroom) is important in establishing a positive classroom environment. While there must be consequences, it is always best to avoid getting into a power struggle with students. Behavior specific praise is really useful, too. Instead of saying, "Good job" it would be more helpful to say, "You are doing a good job on the carpet. You are criss-cross with hands in your lap and your eyes are on me. You are ready to learn."This helps reinforce those behaviors and also gives other students the chance to self-correct.
